We tried Bánh Xèo once at a restaurant at home in San Diego, and didn't think much of it. Who would want to eat greasy fried rice pancakes? It turns out that a) it probably wasn't a great version and b) we were doing it wrong.

Within minutes of sitting down at Bánh Xèo Bà Dưỡng in Da Nang, we had an assortment of foods in front of us - greens, vegetables, pork skewers (Nem Lui) and, of course, the centerpiece - Bánh Xèo.

This is a rice wrap affair. Take a rice wrapper, add in veggies, a chunk of Bánh Xèo and a pork skewer and roll it all up.

We were pretty pathetic at the wrap and roll technique - so much so, that a group of ladies sitting next to us, after watching us for a while with bemused expressions, gave us some lessons. We still weren't very good at it, but the gesture was appreciated.

The rolls get dipped in this delicious sauce:

I'm not sure what was in it - it was lightly sweet, super savory, and had bits of minced pork in it.

Tasty and fun to eat - we really enjoyed our meal.

Despite a rainy evening, the place was packed from the time we arrived until when we left.
